The FBI Virus has struck Denver again. We have been getting calls at our office over the last few weeks with consumers and businesses that have been stricken with this virus.
Most people have become pretty used to being cautious when it comes to email. If they receive an email from someone they don’t know; as long as they don’t open the attachment they are safe. The FBI Virus works very differently. If a user accidentally happens upon a compromised website it immediately launches a trojan virus and locks up your computer with a very ominous looking screen. There is no way to close the screen. The screen shows a very official looking badge and a list of fines for offenses the user has allegedly been guilty of ranging anywhere from $200 to $500. In the bottom right hand corner the user is given the option of immediately paying the fines through MoneyPak.
If you encounter this virus do not pay the faux fines. This is ransomware period. The FBI, Cyber Crimes unit, or the police department is not going to contact you by locking up your computer if you are viewing child pornography. If that were really the case they are going to show up at your front door.
If you computer is locked up; call us at the office immediately at 720-746-9763. Even if you are somehow able to unlock the computer yourself please still give us a call. The trojan virus could very well still be on your computer and needs to be removed.
