Ashley Madison. How many of us had even heard of this before the story broke. Okay, well apparently a lot of us but that is for a different blog site….
The thing is hackers are getting extremely sophisticated and they are working day and night to try and gain access to big companies data. As the news tells us pretty much every week, they are succeeding. Other than being a customer of Ashley Madison why should you care about Cyber Security? If they are going after the Big Fish…. guess what Little Fish are easy prey in their eyes.
We can all learn a thing or two from what has happened to these larger organizations and work to put steps in place today to protect ourselves and our clients.
It’s All About the Data.
As a business we are going to have sensitive customer data. Here is the thing, we need to get dead serious about Cyber Security and our responsibility to protect our customers data. In addition, we need to do a deep dive and decide if we are potentially keeping data on file that we just don’t need. Regardless, the data that we do have; encrypt it, encrypt it, encrypt it. If there is a breach what you have on file won’t matter.
Get very hands on with this topic. Code Blue Computing has run into client after client that insists their data is safe because of a product they bought or because their formed I.T. Consultant told them it was. Any I.T. Firm that is worth its weight is going to be able to explain to you in terms you understand how your data is secure if they can’t it probably isn’t.
Business Owners Are Ignoring the Elephant in the Room.
Truth be told, as business owners we all have fleeting thoughts about cyber security when stories like these break. So many business owners push that to the back of their mind, thinking oh that is happening to them but not to me. Sorry, it is happening to you and thousands and thousands of businesses just like yours every week. One report recently showed that only 42% of businesses have invested any resources in Cybersecurity in the last year. Businesses are not taking this seriously and it will bite them, and bite them hard.
What Are Your Employees Up to Anyway?
So many businesses avoid putting controls in place regarding employee Internet activity and Cyber Security; but this is extremely important. Did you know that if an employee is surfing Child Pornography websites that authorities could come in and seize your equipment and evidence. It can and does happen. Put that aside, many of the malware attacks that businesses experience are a direct result of improper employee Internet usage. As responsible business owners we need to counsel our employees regarding Internet usage on company premises and equipment and we need to proactively install Internet filters to help keep employees away from certain categories of websites as an additional layer of protection.
In 2015, it is time to get serious about Cyber Security. This is a very real issue and I am afraid will continue to be from this point forward. If you are still running on Microsoft XP or below, you need to bite the bullet and upgrade immediately. You are getting no security patches and are exactly the type of business hackers are targeting. Check to make sure you have an up to date Anti Virus Solution, viruses are a huge point of entry for the hacker.
Where do we start? Well, have a complete security audit completed for your business. Have an Outside I.T.Firm look at everything computers, servers, firewalls, the network. The can assess your current situation, find holds or points of vulnerability, and help you put together an action plan going forward for Cyber Security that should enable you to sleep at night and protect your business.
