There have been a few new contenders in the computer virus arena this fall. We thought an update was definitely in order.
We have been getting many calls lately on the Reveton virus. This is also known as the FBI virus. This is a nasty little computer virus that actually installs itself when an unsuspecting user clicks on a compromised website. The user then receives a message supposedly from the FBI or the Department of Justice. It indicates they have been identified as being associated with child pornography or some other illegal activity. Users are then prompted to pay a $200 fine via a prepaid money service. Full details on this virus can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2012/august/new-internet-scam.
Another nasty computer virus that has popped up recently is affecting Skype users. They receive a message “lol is this your new profile pic” which has a link with a zip file. After they click on the link they get a pop up message that tells them all of their files have been encrypted, and will be deleted if they do no pay $200 within 48 hours. This malicious virus is a Dorkbot Worm which is a form of ransomware.
These are good reminders to us all to be cautious when we are online. Be aware of suspicious messages and do not click on them. Take special attention of the websites you are visiting as well.
It is very important to have anti virus software installed on your computer. Our favorite program is AVG. More information can be found at http://www.avg.com/us-en/buy-antivirus?cmpid=aff_cj_us.
Once you have chosen your anti virus protection, you need to make sure that it is set up to automatically scan you computer daily, and you need to make sure that you don’t allow the software to expire.
Computer viruses are constantly changing, no software can protect you from everything, but along with employing safe Internet browsing practices hopefully you can keep most of them at bay.
