One of the top inquiries we receive from our customers in Denver is Why is My Computing Running So Slow? Remember how speedy your computer was when you first got it? Over time it has become less and less responsive.
When you first purchase your computer it is set up to perform optimally. As time goes on, we start to add and delete programs. As we do this, we slowly begin to overwrite those factory settings and the slowdown begins.
When you begin to ask why is my computer running so slow, you should check the programs that are running in the background. The very first thing you should do is to disable any program that automatically starts each time you turn your computer on. It is also very important to make sure that you do not have an Anti Virus program running scans in the background during times you are working. This will absolutely affect the performance of your computer. Instead, schedule your anti-virus to scan during off-peak hours (during the night when you are asleep).
Run a virus and malware scan. You would be amazed to find that 90% of the time when you are looking for a reason why your computer is running so slow this is the culprit. Many times we have picked up viruses that we are completely unaware of. This is why routinely scanning our computers for viruses and malware is imperative not only to speed but to the overall health of our computer.
Check that all of the necessary Windows updates have been installed on your computer. Your computer will check for Windows updates nightly (usually 3am is the default), if you turn your computer off at night the updates will occur during the times you are working, slowing down the machine. Also, many updates require a reboot. By allowing your computer to check for and install during the night you will dramatically increase the performance of your computer. Be cautious, however, not to have your anti-virus do scans during the times Windows updates are occurring. Schedule your anti-virus scans before the windows updates.
How Old is That Computer Anyway?
Is your computer is five years old or older and you are asking yourself why is my computer so slow? It may be time to ask yourself why you haven’t upgraded your system yet. The truth is that the rate that new technologies and programs are coming out becomes faster and faster all of the time. These new technologies many times require additional memory and faster processors. You will need to either accept the fact that your computer is going to run slower than the newer ones or upgrade. Simply adding memory can greatly improve performance for little money and this small step can many times extend the life of your computer for a couple more years.
These are just a few of the things we will check when a customer calls to ask us why is my computer running so slow. Every customers situation is different, we are happy to help you trouble shoot what specifically may be going on with your system.
